Counseling
My View of People & Problems
People are not the problem, the problem is the problem. I am an optimist, and I believe that there is hope no matter the depth of brokenness or chaos in your life. I believe that you have value and purpose for living and that you can effect change in your life.
In the face of difficult and overwhelming circumstances that are a part of life you can learn new thinking skills and incorporate more adaptive behaviors to your situation . God has given you skills, resources, competencies, and relationships to solve many of life’s challenges. I will work with you with the expectation and hope that together we can discover and develop more resources to solve the challenges pushing against you.
I am a follower of Jesus and approach the entirety of my life from a Christian worldview. This means that I believe that every person has value in the eyes of God and deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. Many people want to integrate their faith in God with the counseling process and seek out a counselor who shares their faith and spiritual perspective. If you would would like to integrate your faith into the counseling process please feel free to discuss that with me.
Counseling Approach
Every person is unique and deserves to have a tailor made plan for helping him or her. My approach includes assessment in four key dimensions of life: physical, psychological, social, & spiritual. I use a mix of theories and techniques designed to help the client address their specific challenges.
Life stories are important in how we make sense of our lives. So I use approaches such as Narrative therapy and Motivational Interviewing in helping a person make positive changes in life. I also utilize powerful cognitive and behavior techniques to help the client engage in sound thinking, facilitate emotional health, so that adaptive behaviors can emerge. Additionally, I will apply concepts and ideas from existential and gestalt theories to help the client develop the ability to live in the here and now.

Faith & Counseling
Some people wonder how my personal faith may impact the counseling process. That’s a great question, and a very important one. I am committed to my faith in Christ but I do not, nor will I, use the counseling relationship as a platform to impose my faith on others. I am committed to following the laws of the State of Ohio and the ethical guidelines of the American Counseling Association.
The ACA code of ethics states that “counselors are aware of their own values, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors and will avoid imposing their values that are inconsistent with counseling goals. Counselors respect the diversity of clients…”
I welcome clients from all walks of life and will not discriminate against anyone with regard to gender, sexual orientation, religion, socio-economic status, or race. I will not use the counseling relationship as an avenue for imposing my faith commitments on a client. However, I am willing to offer a faith perspective to clients wanting to incorporate faith into the counseling process.
